Attending to the Christian Basics

Judas allows his love for Our Lord to grow cold. Sure, he is around Jesus and the other disciples but only for the show and appearance of being Jesus’ disciple. Judas’ daily surrender to the will of God was a farce. Judas does not want to hold fast to memories of Jesus’ miracles and cures anymore than he recalls the many joyful moments with Jesus and the others. Judas is a man who has lost his way; he is out of touch. Over time, Judas actually becomes quite capable of committing the supreme betrayal.

How is this so?

Deception and disloyalty in small matters leaders to greater acts of betrayal. It likens the destruction of a building that is brought about by prolonged neglect. The result of neglect always is ruin.

Indifference is neglect.

Saint Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus, is most helpful with regards to STEADY PERSEVERANCE. She exhorts us to do “little things with great love.”  That is, be alert and attentive toward daily duties and everyday responsibilities, seeking first and always to do God’s will by living forth from our Christian vocation sincerely and authentically.

It is committing yourself to what my coaches along the way called the basics or fundamentals. Learn them well, do them well and greater challenges are easily met.

As we reflect upon these scenes from our the passion of Our Lord, let us consider our faithfulness in the tiny details of our own vocation.

  • Am I living authentically or are there indicators of living a farce?
  • Do I attend faithfully to my fundamental duties and responsibilities?
  • Do I take care to make sure that my relationship with Jesus is sincere?
  • Do I avoid become attached to material things – wealth, pleasure, honor?
