Hidden Glory

As we enter the final two weeks of Lent (Passiontide), many Churches cover the crucifix and statues with purple cloth. It may seem strange that during this holiest season of the year, we cover the very image of our salvation. It certainly gets our attention.

The crucifix still remains the symbol of the greatest act of God’s saving love. Covering this image can help us to focus even more on the Sacred Mysteries of these coming days and draw our attention to listening even more attentively to the words of Scripture we hear proclaimed. Jesus’ glory was hidden during His final days on earth and was revealed in fullness only in the Resurrection. May these coverings help to heighten our anticipation of the Easter celebration.
