The Psalms

The PSALMS are a powerful way to ask for God’s help.

Psalms

By means of praying the Psalms of the Old Testament which number 150 in all, we thank God, praise God and seek God’s mercy. Our Lord Himself knew the Psalms and prayed them repeatedly. Indeed, it was a verse from Psalm 22 that Jesus prayed aloud in the last moments of his life this side of heaven: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). The Psalms were the customary prayers of the Hebrew family. Saint Joseph and Our Lady certainly poured forth their immense piety in the familiar and well-remembered words of the Psalms. Jesus learned them by heart from his parents and made them his own. It is not surprising then that the Church makes use of them every day in the Holy Mass and that they constitute the principal part of the daily prayer for priests and consecrated religious women and men – the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Office.
