Hope in the New Season

It is difficult for me not to get swept away in the excitement of a new baseball season. Of course the MLB fans everywhere are hopeful  as their team takes the field in the dawning of a new season. Yes, even those of us whose favorite team is Cleveland.

The truth is that my beloved CLEVELAND INDIANS begin today as much better team than they were a year ago. They might even break even this season and finish 81-81.  Recall last year they nearly lost 100 games. It sure felt like they did. Many fans lost interest in a season whose final pitch simply could not be thrown quickly enough last year.

Several new acquisitions provide a blending of speed at the top of the line-up and power in the heart of the order. Of course, those same long-ball hitters are going to frustrate terribly at times by stranding plenty of runners on base while swinging for the fences and striking out. The pitching looks stronger and more reliable.  If some veteran arms rediscover past consistencies finding the strike zone and new arms meet reasonable expectations, the pitching quickly could become  a strength. No doubting the pitchers are pleased by the vastly improved defence behind them. This year’s club is led by a new manager whose record includes two World Series titles.

Easter is all about hope. So, too, are indications of hope seen in Cleveland. Some might consider that a miracle. Go Tribe!
