Holy Saturday (4/20)

After Jesus’ death, precious few remain atop Calvary. Our blessed Mother is there along with the beloved disciple John and Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee and a few other remarkably holy women who “had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him” (Matthew 27:55).

They simply could not peel away from His lifeless Body. Jesus was the object of all their love. Love alone kept them there. Genuine fidelity perseveres in even the darkest and most painful moments. Real love digs in more deeply, even when others flee and all seems lost.

It’s easy to be faithful to God whenever everything goes our way.

  • Where are we when darkness overtakes and when, for a moment, God permits evil an upper hand?
  • Where are we when that which is beautiful, good and true seems swept away and lost forever?

There is nothing easy about genuine fidelity and real love. That’s why God’s really faithful ones are far fewer than they ought really to be.

  • Where are you now? Where do you want to be?
