Feast Day / Guardian Angels (10/2)

Devotion to the GUARDIAN ANGELS goes back to the beginnings of Christianity. Angel means messenger. They are identified because of their role as intermediaries between God and humanity.

Throughout the ages, God’s faithful ones enjoyed comfortable friendships with their Guardian Angel and regularly sought their intercession.

Sacred Scripture is replete with reference to angels and how they are yet another special blessing we receive from God to help us draw ever closer to Him while we still are this side of heaven.

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent for service, for the sake of those who shall inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14)

Jesus Himself seeks to draw our attention and confidence to the presence of ministering angels among us. They constantly watch over the Church and each one of its members.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” (John 1:51).

Today is a great moment to reaffirm devotion to our own Guardian Angel. We all are ever in need of our special angel’s advocacy every day of our lives. Their counsel and suggestions come from God for they are God’s messengers to us. Their capacity for hearing and understanding us is far superior even to that or our most trusted friends since their presence at our side is uninterrupted. They are able to enter more deeply into our intentions, our desires and our needs than any human friend because they can enter our imagination directly. As blessings from God, they are able to provoke images, awaken memories and make impressions in order to help us find our way safely to God.

Guardian Angels unite their own prayers to our personal pleas and place them all before Almighty God.

Angel of God, my guardian dear,

To Whom God’s love commits me here,

Ever this day (night) be at my side,

To light and guard, rule and guide. Amen.
