Chrism Mass Today

Please whisper a prayer for your priests who later today will gather around the bishop at Rosary Cathedral to celebrate the annual CHRISM MASS. This Mass begins at 11:00 a.m. and is open to all. It will be the single largest liturgical gathering of the priests throughout the entire diocese in the year.

If you cannot reach a priest today between 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m now you know why!

During the solemn liturgy, the bishop blesses three oils:

  • OIL OF CATECHUMENS (“Oleum Catechumenorum” or “Oleum Sanctorum”)
  • OIL OF THE INFIRM/SICK (“Oleum Infirmorum”)
  • HOLY/SACRED CHRISM (“Sacrum Chrisma”).

These three holy oils are used in the administration of the Sacraments throughout the year. The remaining holy oil stocks are burned today in parishes and other Catholic institutions so to be replenished by the newly blessed oil.
