Fifth Sunday of Lent [B] 3/22/15

Jeremiah 31:31-34

In the First Reading, we heard God’s bold promise to establish a new covenant with His People after the first one He forged had been broken by humanity. God’s law is not so much commands to be followed as much as it is true love outpoured. Indeed, He loves us so much that He dares to assume all our guilt to ensure our salvation.

John 12:20-33

The Gospel Reading opens with Gentiles – foreigners – wishing to meet Jesus. We witness the mission of Jesus extending beyond Israel to include all nations. By means of His Cross all people will be drawn to Him. Jesus emphasizes the spiritual nature of His mission and ministry and is not concerned about political interpretations. The high (!) stakes involve much more than life as we see and experience it in the world of time.
