As we approach the Fourth of July and celebrate our freedom as a nation, I reflect on what this gift of freedom means in my daily life. I am certainly blessed abundantly to live in a country in which freedom allows me so many basic rights and privileges. I am also reminded of so many in our world who are not so fortunate.
Of course, freedom also comes with responsibilities. I must be willing to face the truth, even when it is painful and humbling – in my personal life, in the circles of my family and workplace, in my Church, and in the broader society. At times, this will mean I must admit my need to change, and at times it will mean my inviting others to change. While not necessarily comfortable, it is this living in the truth which will allow me the freedom to be all that I am called to be.
