The Meaning of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh

The earlist commentators on the Gospels – the Church Fathers – explain the meaning of the three gifts (cf. Matthew 2:11).

Gold because the Holy Child truly is a King.

Frankinsence because the Holy Child truly is God.

Myrrh because the Holy Child is destined to be a Sacrifice.

Friends, we have been made by God to discover and experience the deep and lasting joys that the shepherds and magi found to be true this side of heaven. In imitation of them, let us no longer be smitten by the petty pleasures the world only can offer and instead set our sight squarely on Christ Jesus the Lord.
