The First Martyrs of Rome – June 30

Today we commemorate the Christians who underwent the first persecution against the Church under the emperor Nero, after the destruction of Rome by fire in the year 64.

These first Christians did not give up their professional activities and social. They very much considered themselves to be living in the world, however viewing themselves as salt and light.

Like the earliest Christians, we will do well to consider the example and influence of faith we provide in our daily living.

  • Do we move others to draw closer to Christ? Do we say and do things differently than those who do not know Jesus?
  • How are we championing those most vulnerable around us, the ones about whom others freely gossip and cowardly disparage?
  • What about our spending habits – do they give cause for others to live more generously and compassionately?
  • Do we share a genuine cheerfulness and thankfulenss with everyone?
