Simple Common Sense (8/31)

Some call it simple common sense.

Our commitment to Christ should lead us to speak and act smartly. Genuine Christian commitment always is distinguishable from pagan naturalness. Intentional disciples ought to steer clear of occasions that sicken the mind and harm the soul.

Christian maturity is seen in efforts to safeguard our senses always and everywhere.

  • Simply turn off certain TV shows, movies, video clips, webpages, audio and radio. .
  • Simply refuse to take part in distasteful and seedy conversations. Whenver needed, change the tone of the discussion.
  • Simply present yourself appropriately and modestly in speech and appearance.
  • Simply avoid those places – both actual and virtual – that are unbecoming for intentional disciples even if trendy and popular for others.
  • Simply object to indecent and degrading behavior. The word “obscene” comes from ancient Greek and Roman theater and refers to those things offensive to the senses and ought not to be performed on the stage out of respect to the audience. Even pagan civilizations wildly permissive in moral practices understood that there are some things never to be done in public.

It is not easy living in a culture that has lost its Christian outlook. Then, again, Our Lord Jesus never promised us an easy way. Fortunately He promises the necessary graces to find our way safely and happily through difficulties. It is for us simply to accept the graces we need and to forgo the rest.
