The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to SAINT JUAN DIEGO on Tepayac hill near Mexico City on this very day in 1531. Our Lady asked for the construction of a church on the site in her honor. An unbelieving bishop initially, Juan Diego returned to the bishop a few days later with roses that he had received from another encounter with Our Lady as a sign of her request. As the flower fell from Juan Diego’s cloak to the ground before the astonished bishop the image of the Blessed Virgin was impressed miraculously on the simple garment before their eyes.
