Father’s Day 2020
Dear Dad:
Your self-proclaimed “pearls of wisdom” have helped me navigate the extended malaise. Sometimes I hear your booming voice resounding vital encouragements, like:
- “Treat others like you want to be treated.”
- “Actions speak louder than words.”
- “No problem.”
- “Life is good – find it [the good].”
- If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.”
Other timely remembrances of you have given me a laugh when I most needed one.
- Helping officials make the right call through the TV.
- Infallibly declaring all Packers are penalty free.
- Flying your alma mater Wisconsin Badgers flag proudly on game day – in Ohio.
- Offering the last roll at the table after you first put half of it on your plate.
- Having the waitress stay after refilling your water so you could immediately drink the whole glass and have her refill it a second time.
You have been and always will be a most trusted voice, a safe harbor in the tempest. Now seven years since your blessed entrance into eternity, I still slow and imagine your counsel when I’m unsure. And in my more impulsive moments, I grin knowing that was your contribution, not as much mom’s. Your example equipped me to live life, contend don’t pretend, set your sights on things that matter and go after them. Nothing good comes easy, so commit and make it happen.
These days, I cling to the truth that with death life is changed, not ended. What hasn’t changed, however, is my supreme joy in wanting to be known as one of your children.
A most blessed Father’s Day to you in heaven, knowing you are tirelessly helping me in mysterious and real ways to come to know the Absolute Love you know perfectly.
Love Always,
Dave
