Preaching Notes – 2nd Sunday Advent (Sun) December 5

On the Second Sunday of Advent, the Church directs our attention to John the Baptist (Luke 3:1-6).

Everything in John’s life is informed by who God created him to be; namely, preparing people for the Messiah’s arrival.

There is no personal gain in what he does. Indeed, he ultimately will surrender his life rather than compromise his mission.

So it is for intentional disciples: God’s plan becomes our way in everything.

A final consideration about John is how many people depended on him for their own recognition of God. Many people depend on whether we live our lives as God wants. We have been made for mission – that is, God’s mission. Communities of intentional disciples – healthy parishes –  bring people closer to Christ.
