Opportunities Adversities Bring (9/9)

“Blessed are you when people hate you, drive you out and denounce your name on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy!” (Luke 6:22)

Listen very closely to Jesus’ words. It is not what people say and do however cruel and demeaning, but rather why; that is, on account of the Son of Man. In Matthew’s version of Jesus’ identical teaching, he expresses the why simply as,  “Because of me.” (Matthew 5:11)

Genuine followers of Jesus dare to proclaim that persecutions are not disgraceful but blessedness. Some measure of adversity in living our faith indicates we truly are His friends and really do know Him.

It is difficult – perhaps even impossible – to be intentional disciples and members of His Church and not experience strong push back from the prevailing pleasure seeking pagan culture. There is no reason today to be surprised by resistance to the teachings of Our Lord.

How especially curious it is, however, when hostility toward Gospel truths arise from those opponents who continuously are trumpeting tolerance, understanding and diversity.

To remain faithful to Christ we must pardon our persecutors and make amends for our own failings while keeping our sights set squarely on Him. Seek first God’s Kingdom; that is, to see God’s Glory in daily living and to respond obediently, cheerfully and confidently.
