Jesus speaks repeatedly about the need for prayer. In today’s Gospel, prayer yet again is front and center (Luke 18:9-14). By means of another story or parable, Jesus explains that prayer is essential for following Him. If we are to be right with God, we must pray. Prayer is neither optional nor occasional for the intentional disciple. Without prayer cannot hope to see and follow Christ in the middle the world in which we live. We need prayer as much as we need food to eat and air to breath and water to drink. This makes clear why the devil doggedly tries to keep Christians from praying with superficial excuses and acceptances of mediocrity.
