JESUS’ TRANSFIGURATION

Traditionally, the account of the TRANSFIGURATION of Jesus is read on the SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT. This reminds us that the visible revelation of Jesus’ glory (Matthew 17:1-9) follows upon His having explained to His disciples that He was departing for Jerusalem to suffer and die (Matthew 16: 21-28).

In contrast to Matthew’s version of the story which we hear this weekend, Luke tells us that the conversation Moses and Elijah share with Jesus centered on His approaching end in Jerusalem.

The Church also has us proclaim the story of the transfiguration to teach us that there is no place for the disciple to pitch a tent, to dwell on the moments of success which occasionally come our way.  The season of Lent instructs us that we must follow a suffering Jesus along a way of the Cross to come with Him to glory.
