The devil’s error was rejecting God’s invitation to a higher and more abundant life (Luke 4:1-13). Devoured by pride, the devil opts for greatness on his own terms.
In this sense, Milton is spot on correct: “Satan prefers to reign in hell, rather than to serve in heaven.”
