Jesus the Lamb of God (1/3)

The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

For the first time in the Gospel, Jesus is called the “Lamb of God.” Eight centuries earlier the prophet Isaiah had been inspired by the Holy Spirit to compare the Messiah – God’s Holy Anointed One – with the sacrifice of a lamb. Through the use of lamb, the people of Israel established and renewed their union with God. Jesus is the one through whom God enters the human story, offering us perfect reconciliation with Him.
