Jesus’ First Miracle (1/16)

The GOSPEL READING proclaimed this weekend at SUNDAY MASS retells the story of Jesus’ first miracle (John 2:1-11). The festive scene is set in a Galilean village close to Nazareth where a wedding is being celebrated. We learn that Mary is there. Jesus and his disciples also are among the invited guests.

Wedding celebrations customarily lasted seven days. Many family and friends may well have stayed the entire time. Together with all the residents of the village there is much to plan with regards to providing hospitality.. It is no surprise that a shortage of food or wine created a crisis.

Women who knew the family would eagerly assist with the preparations. Maybe there were more people than expected or perhaps the planning was shortsighted. Whatever the reason, we soon realize that there was no more wine. Our Lady, who is helping, recognizes the problem and simply expresses the pressing need directly to her Son: “They have no wine” (John 2:3).

Mary teaches us how to pray.

Initially it seems that Jesus dismisses His mother’s request: “My hour has not yet come” (v. 4). However, she knows perfectly the heart of her Son, Calmly and confidently Mary instructs the servants: “Do whatever he tells you” (v. 5).

Lord Jesus, I abandon myself into your hands. I give you all my cares and concerns. Every pressing need, known and unknown, is wholly yours to do with as you will. I believe in you. I hope in you. I trust in you. I love you, Jesus.
