Perhaps Peter is fishing for reassurance from Jesus.
After witnessing the dramatic encounter between the rich young man and Jesus and watching the former leave sad because he insists upon clinging tightly to many worldly possessions, Peter says to Jesus:
“We have given up everything and followed you” (Mark 10:28).
We have given up everything when nothing gets in the way of our love for Christ Jesus.
Jesus wants us to be happy this side of heaven. Seeking Jesus leads to happiness that far exceeds all that the world offers. Even though we belong to Jesus and sincerely follow Him, moments still happen when everything suddenly is more difficult. Staying close to Jesus – imitating His example and taking to heart His words – enables us to go through life with joy and confidence.
