Today’s Gospel recounts our Blessed Lord inviting Matthew to become His disciple as He crossed by the taxation station. Matthew “got up and followed Jesus” (Matthew 9:9).
Take special note of Matthew’s wholehearted answer to the call of Christ. There are no hesitations, no conditions, no terms negotiated. Rather we witness a man steeped in the shameless exploitation of others responding obediently and cheerfully to the mysterious and real in-breaking of divine grace.
Friends, it is for God Himself to set the time and place of calling us to follow Him. Consider this carefully, however: the Lord may not lovingly knock a second time.
