Encountering Christ Through Illness

There are moments in our lives when we are sick or some people around us are ill, including family and friends who are battling serious afflictions and with whom we have great love and affection. Illnesses always are moments for drawing closer to Christ the Lord. When we bear suffering for love of God, be it our own or the sufferings or the sufferings we experience walking alongside others who are ill, it becomes a way for sanctification for we are at the Cross of Christ.

That we all will suffer this side of heaven is a given. How we suffer is a choice that makes all the difference.

Let the words of Our Lord move us to greater compassion for those who are sick and attending to them lovingly despite the difficulties in doing so: “whatever you do for one of these least brothers and sisters, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

Ask God for help in bearing illness, that our own suffering will mysteriously and really give witness to His Presence. Only with Christ is found meaning and purpose in sickness and suffering.
