Joshua 24:1-2, 15-17
The First Reading tells the story of Joshua’s dramatic challenge. He places before the entire nation of Israel the necessity of deciding whether or not they will serve the Lord God totally and completely. Joshua boldly declares that he and his household will be faithful to God. Sadly, the people pay little heed to Joshua’s stern warning against deciding lightheartedly and the consequences that will follow from any choice that is lukewarm. As for God, He remains always and ever faithful. It is out of love that He must chastise and punish Israel’s infidelities.
John 6:60-69
In the light of His promise of the Holy Eucharist, Jesus challenges his listeners, including his disciples, with a similar ultimate decision. There is no neutrality – the response to Jesus is either all in or not at all. According to the Gospel Reading many disciples find Jesus’ teaching much more than they care to do and excuse themselves. Not concerned in the least about numbers, Jesus turns to the Twelve and asks them: “Do you want to leave me too?” As a spokesman for the small group of faithful followers, Peter expresses belief that Jesus is “the Holy One of God.” This response is hatched by faith. So, too, is it meant to happen with each of us.
