“He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end” (John 13:1).
Jesus spends His final hours together with His closest friends, the ones whom He has called to loving friendship in the most intimate of ways. He wants to show them ultimate proof of His absolute love and fidelity.
The upper room is a confluence of sweet intimacy and deep anguish.
- With silver in hand, Judas waits to spring dastardly betrayal.
- Before long Peter will deny, deny again and deny yet a third third time.
- The whole lot, absent one, soon will be no where to be found with their Lord.
And the all-merciful God pursues His rebellious creatures, not with threats or vengeance, but with the most delicate devices of His Love.
Love Alone.
