In 1999 the bishops of the United States transferred the celebration of Our Lord’s Ascension 40 days after Easter (Ascension Thursday) to Sunday. The Scripture readings all revolve around this great mystery: Jesus’ ascension into heaven simultaneously inaugurates the Church’s mission to all the world.
Acts 1:1-11
The First Reading destroys the naïve expectation of the disciples that the Lord would employ his authority on earth to set up a worldly reign with all of them receiving privileged positions. Something far better is intended for them: they are to advance God’s Kingdom and will be equipped for mission by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Luke 24:46-53
According to the Gospel Reading the final gesture of our Blessed Lord on earth is to impart a blessing. After forty days spent together in His company, the disciples now are ready to witness to all they have seen and heard. The Holy Spirit will confirm in them the teachings of Jesus and lead them proclaim God’s truth to all the nations.
