Our Lord’s New Commandment (3/24)

During the Last Supper, Jesus announces a new commandment.

“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34-35).

According to our Blessed Lord, the way in which we will be known as His followers is the manner in which we treat those around us. Our real relationship with Him will be seen by how we seek to understand others and by our willingness to help them.

  • Do the people most often around us know we are Jesus’ disciples by our kind, understanding, patient and encouraging approach that characterizes our daily interaction with them?
  • Do the people most often around us know we are Jesus’ disciples by the genuine care and concern we show them in thoughts, words and deeds?
  • Do the people most often around us know we are followers of Jesus by how we seek time and again to make things up with them when we have treated them poorly and insensitively?
