Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31

The First Reading presents us with an exemplary woman as the model for us all in using God’s gifts well. Christians, of course, connect this figure to Mary, the mother of God and our mother. In the midst of all the sinners who fail to live up to their promises, Mary is the faithful one living according to God’s Word.

Matthew 25:14-30

The Gospel has to do with our giving an account of ourselves before Almighty God. Talents are valuable sums of money. We are to respond to divine grace – God’s free self-giving – by making a real and genuine effort throughout the entirety of our lives. God’s gifts to us are given so as to yield a profit.  What matter is putting them to good use.
