18th Sunday in Ordinary Time [B] 8/2

Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15

From a human perspective, it is easy to understand the people’s impatience and irritability. After all, they had been led into the wilderness by God only to find no food there. God promises a double miracle: meat in the evening and bread in the morning. The Old Testament miracle anticipates the heavenly bread come down from heaven Who provides eternal life – Jesus.

John 6:24-35

In the Gospel Reading, the crowd pursues Jesus so that they can continue to be fed by Him. Jesus’ instructions are for them to work for food that endures eternally. God’s work is that humanity comes to believe rather than achieve. Instead of it being a human accomplishment, faith is a complete giving of oneself to God who accomplishes all that we need – and much more.
