TWO GREATEST ADVENT ACTION FIGURES

During ADVENT, the Church places before us two figures for our special consideration.

One figure stands tall and appears much more on the haggard side, sporting the latest fashions in camel’s hair and dining on locusts and wild honey. Loud and intense, nevertheless their is a charisma that attracts more than it intimidates. He only seeks to be a clear voice exhorting all who hear to repent.

The other figure we most likely do not notice as quickly. She is shrouded and wrapped in her own deep thoughts. Her body tells of the Holy One whom she is expecting. Her softly spoken words are similarly strong and committed: “Let it be done to me according to Thy word” (Luke 1:38).

Both JOHN THE BAPTIST and MARY know whose arrival it is for which they wait. They are waiting for no less than the arrival of God. Not for some charismatic leader, not for some superhero, not for better times nor for former days, not for trendy religious fads and emotional highs, not for a vague utopia where everything is promised to be perfect – no! They are waiting for God to arrive right where they are.

1) How are you listening to God’s Word?

2) What apects of you life require repentance to God and reception of divine mercy and strength?

3) How are you growing in sensitivity and service of others?
