Getting to the Root (3/14)

Merely listing personal faults always is overwhelming and disheartening.

Instead, focus on the degree to which personal failings are voluntary. It is the deliberatenessof faults and failings where the greatest obstacle to spiritual progress and union with God always lurk. Just as we work our way to get to the root of weed in order to eliminate the unsightly blight, genuine Christians dare to burrow deeper in order to get to the root of their personal sins and imperfections.

That is, my visible faults against charity, patience, and sincerity might have the same cause, a common source or root – for example pride, jealously or sloth.
