Devouring God’s Word (7/27)

“When I found your words, I devoured them; they became the joy and happiness of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16)

I don’t know exactly when God’s Word took deep hold on me. My earliest memories are marked by fascination and intrigue with the epic stories about God. My interests were fueled further by those who had given themselves entirely over to God’s Word, the saints.

Every Sunday at Mass multiple passages of God’s Word are proclaimed, from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Gospel passage receives heightened attention as we stand and acclaim “alleluia” to herald its proclamation.

Afterwards, Dad and mom were consistent in asking what I heard and understood. Their interest reinforced the organic character of God’s Word, that its truth rightly is to be grasped and applied to daily living.

Though far from devouring God’s Word, from the beginning it certainly mattered to me. It helped immensely that it mattered to my parents.

  • What really matters to you?
  • What are you seeking to grasp? How are you seeking to grasp it?
  • How might God’s Word become more of a positive influence in your daily living?
