22nd Sunday Ordinary Time [A] – August 31, 2014

Jeremiah 20:7-9
As a prophet Jeremiah has a tough go of it. For all his efforts to proclaim God’s Word it seems he only receives the scorn of his hearers. Jeremiah can see the destruction of his nation coming and no one will believe him. Failing in his prophetic mission to change minds and hearts, Jeremiah feels duped by God. Yet, love for God is ablaze in his heart and the prophet is compelled to proclaim the truth despite the rejection of many.

How do you respond to scorn, sarcasm and mockery of God and His Church?

Matthew 16:21-27
How quickly the mighty fall! Only last week we rejoiced in the gift of understanding given to Peter (Mt 16:13-20). Today we read of his failure. Last week Peter was the rock upon which the Church is founded. Today we hear his being the stone which Jesus is tempted to stumble as He continues on to His Cross.

Missionary disciples follow Jesus – they don’t tell Jesus to follow them.
